In coolant systems, floating tramp oils on top of the coolant creates favorable condition for the growth of bacteria (anaerobic) and leaves a oil-residue on the machines and parts.  The oil-residue reduces the cooling performance and the oxygen intake of the coolant. The bacteria is feeding on tramp oils and other components of the coolant and give off offensive smells (hydrogen sulfide gas). The bacteria are also though to be a major cause for many skin rashes, eye and lung irritation, and other health problems.

The Best Strategy is to start fighting the bacteria right from the beginning, using everything we know about coolant maintenance. A good maintenance program will tell us to monitor the pH and concentration, while Oil Skimmers will remove tramp oils.
